ERIC WAS gone for the rest of the day. Phil found Mrs. B in the office, working on the books, and sat down next to her. “I’ll take a salary cut. At least until everything is back to full speed.” He could move back in with his parents if needed. He’d do anything to help the Bevingtons keep their farm.

“Phil, I couldn’t ask you to do that. We’ll get through this.”

“It’s either that or lay off a few of us, right? Better half a salary than none.” He smiled, trying to look optimistic.

Mrs. Bevington had a tear in her eye. She wiped her face. “You’re a good boy, Phil.” Then she turned to him, knitted her brows together, and put her hand on his shoulder. “So is Eric.” That took him aback. Why would she feel she needed to tell him that? “He deserves someone like you. Why don’t you both take the night off and go out. See where your relationship could go.”

Relationship? They barely knew each other. He nodded.

“Mrs. B? Did you always know about me?” They had never talked about Phil’s sexuality, but she always brought up how Eric needed to find a nice boy.

“Sweetie, I lived with Eric during high school; you remember.”

What did she mean by that? Had she known since then?

She threw her arms around Phil and hugged him. “You know I love you, right?”

“I love you too, Mrs. B. You’re a second mom to me.”

She stepped back, nodding, and smiled. “And moms know things.”

Phil nodded. He needed to see where this could go. “I will.”

“Good boy. Now don’t you worry about us. We’ll figure this out. I have a good feeling things are going to turn around after this year’s crop.” Phil wondered how they were doing that without a loan. Maybe Hank had offered to take a pay cut too.

Phil rode up to the orchard thinking about Eric, what his mom said, and their impending date tonight. How would he ask him? “Hey Eric, want to sleep over?” He chuckled, thinking of his reaction. But what if Eric didn’t want him like that? That kiss last night, though, said otherwise.

Making up his mind, Phil pulled out his phone and sent Eric a text. Will you have dinner with me tonight?

It seemed like hours before Eric responded. I’d love to. I should be back by six. Meet you at the house?

Phil grinned at his phone. He quickly typed, I’ll be waiting. God, that sounded stupid. Too late. He’d already hit send.

He opened the Google app on his phone and walked through the orchard, looking for any tubing on the ground needing to be replaced. The crisp air reminded him winter was around the corner. He stopped and breathed it in. There was nothing like Vermont in the fall. The bright-colored leaves blanketed the ground in an explosion of color, readying the forest for the chill of winter. He wanted to show Eric how beautiful it was up here. Tomorrow afternoon, maybe he’d take him for a ride in the tractor.
